GAITHERSBURG – In preparation for the high school football regular season, Gaithersburg High School hosted Magruder for one last scrimmage on Aug. 29.
The Colonels scored first, courtesy of a 60-yard touchdown run by tailback Mason David, while the defense stepped up and made some key plays, including three interceptions.
However, the Trojans found the end zone twice and got the scoring advantage by the end of the scrimmage.
“Our effort was all right,” said Magruder Head Coach Raymond Fowle. “Defense played a lot better than the offense, but it’s a work in progress.”
David made his case to become the starting running back for the Colonels as he took a handoff, turned left and raced down the sideline for the 60-yard score.
Quarterback Jordan Peterwas received the majority of the snaps as he prepared to be Magruder’s starter this season.
Meanwhile, the defensive player of the night turned out to be Andre Proctor, who accounted for all three of the Colonels’ interceptions. Meanwhile, Tyler Bierly will look to turn things around for Gaithersburg in his first year as head coach. Bierly will be filling in for Kreg Kephart, who announced his retirement from the team back in April.
“To fill in for him would be impossible to do,” said Bierly. “Coach Kephart is a legendary coach. I’m just trying to be myself and put a stamp on the program. Coach Kephart did a lot of great things here with winning state championships and regional championships.”
Starting quarterback Jacques Mbengang Jr. got many reps in the scrimmage, while backup Jacob Bryant completed a touchdown pass to receiver Munashe Gwashavanhu later on.
Running back Edward Sirleaf also produced results during the scrimmage, as he broke many tackles during offensive drives, and scored a one-yard touchdown before the end of the game.
“He’s had two really great scrimmages,” Bierly said. “He is a very downhill runner, a very powerful back. He and the other running backs have the potential to be a really great combo.”
Both teams open their seasons on Sept. 6 as Gaithersburg takes on Richard Montgomery while Magruder will host Bethesda-Chevy Chase.
