SANDY SPRING — The Blake High School lacrosse team proved to be too much for Kennedy as the home team escaped with a lopsided 21-0 victory on Senior Night on May 3.
Within the first minute, the Bengals scored three goals thanks to seniors Jastin Garcia-Mendoza, Max Tempchin and Nathan Chung, who had a hat trick Friday night.
Blake scored six more goals in the quarter, including three from senior Ben Hamlett, who totaled four scores on the night.
“It’s nice to see us start coming around,” said Blake Head Coach Jim Potts. “It’s also really nice to get an opportunity for our younger guys to get a run in the game and get some experience for the playoffs.”
Kennedy (1-9) struggled on both sides of the field. The Bengals’ attack ran through the Cavaliers defense multiple times and sent shots at will towards their goal with ease.
It didn’t get any better for the Cavaliers, as they allowed 10 more goals in the second quarter.
Freshman Michael McLean (bottom left), who had one goal in the first quarter, put the ball in the net three more times to become the second Bengals player to total four goals in the game.
“It was a great team win,” said McLean. “We all played well, worked the ball really well, and everyone seemed to have a good time.”
“I think they all played phenomenal,” said Potts. “I’m really excited to see what Michael does. He’s a freshman and leads our team in points this year, so I’m truly excited to see what this unit can do in the playoffs.”
Blake scored two more goals, courtesy of sophomores Alex Wolk and Dylan Cienfuegos, before the contest was called with over five minutes remaining in the third quarter due to lightning.
“Our team helped out a lot getting nice passes in and doing our jobs,” said McLean.
The Bengals will enter the playoffs with a regular season record of 7-7, and Potts is hoping for the best with his team as they prepare to play in the state playoffs. They will travel to play Rockville on May 8 in the first round.
“In our region, the big dog is Westminster,” said Potts. “We’ll probably have to go to them if we have a chance to go any deep(er) in the playoffs.”
