ROCKVILLE – The Magruder Colonels defeated the Springbrook Blue Devils 72-50 on Jan. 18 with the help of its home crowd.
Magruder hit their stride in the third quarter with a string of 3-pointers coming from almost every player on the court, allowing them to take a considerable lead of 25 points.
Springbrook was never able to recover from this onslaught of three’s by the Colonels and just could not get anything to fall, despite dominating the offensive glass.
Most of Magruder’s offense came from senior forward Ebby Asamoah (top right) who was able to produce points from the perimeter as well as from the paint; he finished with18 points.
Another huge contributor on the offensive end for the Colonels was senior forward Malik Abudu (top left) scoring 12 points with most of his shots falling in the second half, helping Magruder build up their lead.
However, in the first quarter, when Springbrook was able to make their shots, both teams were evenly matched.
Junior guard Timitrius Whitney-Hawkins led the Blue Devils in scoring by dropping 14 points with most coming off of fast breaks from Colonel turnovers in transition.
After the end of the first quarter where Springbrook was only down by four, they were never able to get back into the game and take back the lead therefore after.
With Springbrook running a trap defense for the beginning of the second quarter, they looked to be getting back in the game, rattling the Colonel ball handlers forcing turnovers and allowing for Whiney-Hawkins to get points in transition.
However, once Magruder tightened up on offense, they were able to keep the ball in their possession and keep the Blue Devils from converting on the offensive side of the ball.
With the win Magruder improves to 10-3 on the season, improving their win streak to four games. Springbrook drops to 7-6 on the season.
