A Montgomery County grand jury indicted four Damascus High School sophomores on the charge of first-degree rape Thursday afternoon, said Ramon Korionoff, spokesperson for the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Members of a Maryland Grand Jury for Montgomery County indicted 15-year-olds Caleb Thorpe of Gaithersburg, Kristian Jamal Lee of Germantown and Jean Claude Abedi and Will Smith of Clarksburg with eight charges each, according to the indictments. The charges included one count of first-degree rape, three counts of attempting to commit rape and four counts of conspiracy to commit rape.
The four suspects, if convicted, face life in prison, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy has said.
Police initially arrested and charged five Damascus High School students on Oct. 31. Police then upgraded the charges of four of the suspects as adults, under the direction of the state’s attorney’s office.
The charges followed an alleged sexual assault with a wooden broomstick on four Damascus High School junior varsity football players in a freshmen boys’ locker room after school.
Damascus Principal Casey Crouse said the four suspects are also members of the junior varsity football team.
