The Whitman Vikings varsity football team improve to (2-3) after a 14-8 victory over the Wootton Patriots. This game was crucial for both teams as they looked to improve from their (1-3) starts.
Down 8-0 in the third quarter, Whitman looked to put points on the board and Vikings captain Ryan Gurney did just that. On the first kickoff of the second half, Gurney returned the kick for a 75-yard touchdown.
Now down 8-6 after a missed two-point conversion, the Whitman defense looked to get the ball back. The Vikings defense had themselves a day grabbing three total interceptions.
The Wootton Patriots had some great drives but couldn’t finish them off. Running back Matt Amobi had a great performance with the only touchdown for the Patriots. On Wootton’s last drive of the game down 14-8, the Vikings came up big. On fourth down, Gurney picked off Wootton quarterback Kyler Hamlin to seal the game for the Vikings.
When I asked Gurney about how the win helps the team moving forward, Gurney said, “It was a big win for the team being (1-3) and that this could be a nice springboard to start off a little win streak”.
The Whitman Vikings look to do that next week when they face the Richard Montgomery Rockets (3-2). The Patriots look to avenge their loss when they face the Springbrook Blue Devils (1-4).
