Montgomery County Police have charged a Silver Spring child care provider with second-degree child abuse after viewing a video of the woman repeatedly slapping a two-year-old child in the face.
On Jan. 12, detectives from the Special Victims Investigations Division viewed a videotape documenting an adult female, identified as 65-year-old Christina Dhanaraj, abusing the child in her home on the 1600 block of Winding Waye Lane where she provides care.
According to police, the video shows the child sitting quietly in a chair in a room inside Dhanaraj’s home. Dhanaraj approaches the child, begins scolding her and then slaps her in the face with an open hand eight times before pushing the child to the ground.
The caregiver then grabs the victim by the head and pushes her with a jerking motion that forces the child out of a seated position.
Investigators believe the incident occurred in November or December 2017. Dhanaraj admitted to the abuse, police said.
After remaining in police custody for three days, Dhanaraj was released on bond Jan. 16. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. in courtroom 513 of the Montgomery County District courthouse at 191 East Jefferson Street, in Rockville.
Police are concerned there may be other victims. Dhanaraj has provided child care services for the last 10 years and is licensed with the state.
Police are currently working with the Maryland Office of Child Care to revoke Dhanaraj’s child care provider license.
Anyone with information about possible abuse is asked to call the Special Victims Investigations Division at 240-773-5400.
