Nestled amongst the hustle and bustle of downtown Rockville and tucked away next to the ever-so-popular Kung Fu Tea, is a little taste of Paris one might not expect to find in your typical American strip mall. Opened in November 2015, Lavande Patisserie prides itself in being “your home away from home” as a local artisan coffee shop combining sophistication and quality in everything from the food to the decor.
Using the freshest ingredients whenever possible, Lavande’s seasonal menus host an array of intricate desserts and savory options, served up alongside their handcrafted coffee beverages. The pastries are clearly the stars of the show, as you are immediately greeted with a beautiful showcase of the day’s pastries upon entering the cafe.
And yes, they do taste as good as they look.
With all these options, it is easy to become overwhelmed but I promise you with whatever you choose, be prepared to enjoy it. If I had to steer you in any direction though, the raspberry Mon Amour will forever be a personal favorite. This gluten-free dessert is composed of a sweet raspberry and blackberry currant mousse, lychee center and coconut shavings. As the pastry that started it all, this tropical dessert is the perfect summer treat (or really anytime, for that matter) and would be one of the many reasons I would return months later.
Well, that and their signature iced Vanilla Lavender Macchiato, that is. Pouring freshly-brewed Compass Coffee daily, trained baristas craft everything from a basic cappuccino to matcha lattes and this customer favorite. While I did order this by mistake, one could easily describe this mishap as a “happy accident.” The drink had the right balance of espresso to syrup, making it sweet but not too sweet. As someone who is not of floral-flavored drinks, I worried that the lavender flavor would be overbearing but it was anything but that. The lavender flavor was subtle and paired nicely with the rich vanilla flavor.
In the mood for something savory? Lavande has got you covered with its Summer 2017 menu featuring a Morning Glory Croissant with a gouda omelet, turkey or ham, and all the fixings, as well as a Thai Lemongrass Salad complete with cabbage, peppers and a lemongrass dressing. Even better, these two dishes, along with the rest of the summer menu are organic, vegan and/or gluten-free.
So whether you’re looking to grab a quick bite during your lunch break or just want to catch up with some friends over Sunday brunch, Lavande Patisserie will offer you an experience unlike any other. And trust me, your friends and taste buds will thank you.
Lavande Patisserie is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m to 9 p.m., and is located on 275 N Washington St, in Rockville. For more information, you can visit their website at http://lavandepatisserie.com.
