POTOMAC – Bullis junior quarterback Tucker Strachan clinched a 14-7 victory for the Bulldogs against Georgetown Prep Friday with a one-yard touchdown run during the final two minutes of the season finale.
Bullis (7-3 overall, 4-1 IAC) ended the season in second place in the Interstate Athletic Conference standings.
Episcopal (8-0) won the conference while Georgetown Prep (7-3, 3-2) placed third.
“I’m confident the kids gave everything they had,” said Georgetown Prep Head Coach Dan Paro. “You just don’t like losing to Bullis. It’s very disappointing. I think these kids played at a high level this year and they just weren’t able to finish it out.”
In the fourth quarter, Strachan (1-2, 23 yards, 1 TD) capped a 15-play, 76-yard drive with the Bulldogs’ only score of the second half during a game when missed opportunities constantly plagued Bullis (7-3, 4-1 IAC).
The drive chewed 10:09 off the clock, leaving Prep with one last chance after Bullis sophomore wide receiver Bryson Shaw ran in a two-point conversion.
However, Shaw intercepted the ball three plays later to send the Bullis faithful home happy.
“All week long, we’ve been buzzing out to the flat and I guess the quarterback couldn’t see me and it hit me right in the chest and it sealed the deal,” Shaw said.
Prior to the key plays toward the end of the game, the crowd of Bullis supporters sat pensively in the stands as the home team’s miscues included a flubbed PAT, missed field goal, and two fourth down stops inside the 3-yard-line.
Georgetown Prep running back Owen Wright scored the Little Hoyas’ only points, giving them the lead in the third quarter with a one-yard scamper followed by a successful PAT.
That score put Prep ahead after Bullis senior running back Devin Darrington rushed in the only points of the first half.
Darrington led all runners with 165 yards on 37 rushes. Meanwhile, his senior teammate Damani Neal complemented Darrington in the backfield with 67 yards on 13 carries.
“In my mind, we’re definitely the number one team in the IAC,” said Darrington.
