ROCKVILLE – UNITE HERE International Union released its endorsement of state Del. Kumar Barve (D-17) in the Democratic primary for Maryland’s 8th Congressional District Monday.
Barve is running to replace U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-8), who is running for U.S. Senate.
UNITE HERE members work primarily in the hospitality industry as well as the gaming, food service, manufacturing, textile, distribution, laundry, transportation and airport industries.
“Our union decided to endorse Barve because he is an inspiration to our members, a majority of whom are immigrants, and a fighter for working people. He has fought to increase the minimum wage, maintain the prevailing wage and expand workers’ rights,” said UNITE HERE spokesperson Adam Yalowitz.
Barve mentioned his support for the Maryland Dream Act, which provides in-state community college tuition rates for high school graduates who entered the country illegally if they meet certain requirements.
“Our Congress is dysfunctional and I have the strongest track record of bringing people together to achieve real results – on issues like marriage equality, the Dream Act, and a fracking moratorium,” said Barve.
