The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair brings fun, animals and eclectic food for visitors.
Food creates a sense of togetherness in a community that enjoys the fried and greasy goodness of a funnel cake and other goodies.
A large line of residents waits for a $6 funnel cake with a choice of toppings for an extra dollar. This cake is a mess of fried dough with a circular design.
As people are waiting, a sense of giddiness begins to creep into them, and they become impatient.
As the vendors are working double time to pump out these greasy, fried, delicious cakes, the lines grow.
A group of teenagers ravage their funnel cakes topped with chocolate sauce. They say “mmm” and remark how good the cake tastes with the sauce.
Steer clear of the fried Snickers. Not only is this treat $4, but the most potent taste is the grease and the peanuts. The fried outer coating overpowers the taste of the candy bar.
The fried Oreos offered at many of the places are amazingly delicious.
These Oreos become three times the size of a normal Oreo, and the batter and grease do not overwhelm the taste of the cookie and the cream.
Corn dogs seem to be one of the most popular foods for many.
Annie Kimball, a Gaithersburg resident, said she enjoys eating the dogs at the fair.
“It’s something you can only really get at the fair,” Kimball said.
The fried coating with a hot dog in the middle on a stick is an American classic that never goes out of style. It’s simple and easy to eat while you’re walking around trying to decide which ride to get on next.
As the night goes on, people become hungry for more-filling food, and that’s when the barbecue stands grow popular. The barbecue chicken is amazing, slathered in sauce. The smell of the sauce permeates the crowd as the fans in the kitchen blow on the delicious meals.
To end the night off on a sweet note, go to the Ice Cream Parlor, near the Old MacDonald’s Barn. The parlor offers sweet flavors such as peach and salted caramel, as well as chocolate chip cookie dough. Kids light up with joy at the sight of the cold dessert.
The perks of the fair and carnival include exciting rides and animal exhibits, but the food is what really brings out the crowds.
