Four out of five Rockville City Council incumbents will be seeking re-election, but Council member Tom Moore doesn’t plan to be one of them. Late Friday, Moore sent out a statement saying his family “has paid a high price” while has has campaign and governed “virtually nonstop over the past six years, and it is time for me to turn my attentions homeward.”
Moore hinted at such an outcome a week prior when he said during a phone interview that his time on council had “taken a toll” on his family and job.
Meanwhile, Moore’s fellow council member, Virginia Onley, became the last incumbent to file and become certified by the Rockville clerk’s office. The office certified her candidacy on Aug. 5 after she filed July 27, according to statistics provided by the city manager. Other certified candidates included Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton and Council members Beryl Feinberg and Julie Palakovich Carr, who filed in July along with challenger Richard Gottfried. Another challenger, Brigitta Mullican, was the first to successfully file for office back in March.
