ROCKVILLE – Clarksburg rising senior Andrew Kostecka scored a game-high 36 points Tuesday night to lead the Coyotes to a 60-52 victory over Seneca Valley in an MPA Summer League semifinal game at Jewish Day School.
The Coyotes were missing two key players so Kostecka felt he needed to put the team on his back and carry them to victory against a talented Seneca Valley squad.
“We just played hard,” said Kostecka, a rising senior. “I think everybody on the team played well. Coming into the game we knew they were good. We were missing two players but we just had to play harder. We came out on top.”
Kostecka made 19 free throws including seven in the final minute as Clarksburg advanced to play Richard Montgomery in Monday’s championship game.
The Rockets defeated Whitman, 55-47, behind 19 points each from rising seniors Jonathan Custodio and Nassir Robinson.
Meanwhile, Whitman was led by rising juniors Owen Caverly (20 points) and Kieran Kindig (11 points) who combined to score 31 points in the loss.
Whitman rising senior guard Shaq Diboti-Lobe, an All-Sentinel performer who averaged a team-high 15 points per game last season, finished with nine points against Richard Montgomery.
Monday’s championship game will feature two teams that played each other earlier in the summer.
“That’s going to be a tough match,” said Custodio. “We played them earlier in the season, we had a win but we know they’re not the same team from before so now we got to bring the intensity even harder this time.”
