BOYDS – In a solid downpour The Washington Spirit kept their unbeaten home streak alive Saturday with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dash.
Crystal Dunn was the lone goal scorer for the Spirit this week. In the 52nd minute, out sized and out manned, and playing in a steady rain fall she tackled a ball past the Dash defenders, popped back up and took a shot on the goal. The ball found the back of the net after bouncing off the crossbar. Crystal continues to make her mark as a leading scorer for the Spirit.
The Spirit defense was rookie laden this game yet they did an admirable job of holding off the Dash attacks. “The rookies are rookies by age, not by style of play. They can come off the bench and play a full 90 minutes,” Team captain Tori Hustor said
Dunn said the hard fought victory was very physical. “I mean this game is competitive. Every game is a battle. I’m surprised we walk away without someone on a stretcher. This league is really intense.”
When the Women’s World Cup ends on July 5, the National Team players will return to their home league teams.
Locally, July 18 will bring the next home game to the SoccerPlex. It will be the Washington Spirit playing against the Seattle Reign. Between the Reign and the Spirit you may see and have the opportunity to get autographs from World Cup players Allie Krieger, Ashlyn Harris, Diane Matheson, Hope Solo, Megan Rapineo, and others.
