Gaithersburg High School
Coach: Kreg Kephart
Last Season’s Record: 8-2
Likely toughest opponent: Our toughest opponent is always our next opponent so it’ll start off being Sherwood.
Returning offensive starters: Center Chris Moorman, offensive tackle Clayton Lipscomb, and running back Zavae Johnson.
Returning defensive starters: Defensive end Kamonte Carter, defensive tackle Blake Sykes, and linebacker Cotez Ervin
Offensive strengths: Our offensive line
Offensive weaknesses: Inexperience
Defensive strengths: Our front seven
Defensive weaknesses: Inexperience once again. We graduated 35 seniors last year, and we have about 10 seniors returning, and everything else is going to have to be filled in and picked up by the guys who played JV last year.
Offensive outlook: The big offensive line needs to mature and open holes for running backs. Need to solidify quarter back position.
Defensive outlook: Tough experienced front seven needs to control line of scrimmage. We have some talented kids coming up off the JV. If those guys step up and are ready to play I think our defense is going to be pretty strong.
Special teams: We have to find our special teams players. I think I’ve got two young men off the JV that I think are going to fill in for that, but you know it’s a little step from JV to varsity so hopefully these men are mature enough and ready to step up to the next level.
Scouting report: I guess you’ve got to start off with Northwest, since they’re the defending state champions. They have a number of guys coming back including a very, very talented quarterback. I think Quince Orchard will be a tough team despite the loss of Coach Mencarini. I think Sherwood is going to be a tough team, I’ve heard that they are much improved. Churchill is always tough. Magruder has got a new coach and they’re hoping they can turn things around.
Breakaway potential: The Trojans are facing a challenge as a large number of the team’s top players graduated last year; however, the group of younger players moving into starting positions have proven to have potential. That said, the team will have to strengthen its skills positions, in particular its quarterback, in order to have a strong season.
